We have been in Varanasi for a week now, and it is already starting to feel like home. Streets that all looked the same when I first arrived are starting to reveal to me their more subtle individual qualities, and I no longer get (as) lost when I try to go across our neighborhood on a cycle-rickshaw. The heat takes some getting used to, but as long as we stay inside during the middle of the day it is tolerable.
Yesterday we went by car to the nearby town of Sarnath. While in Sarnath we visited several Buddhist monestaries that represented different countries and sects. We were also able to go to Deer Park, the place where the Buddha gave his first sermon over 2500 years ago. Yesterday was an especially exciting time to be in Sarnath, because it was Losar, the Tibetan New Year. At the first monestary that we visited they were having a pretty rowdy party with lots of food and loud music. The monks were really letting-loose, and there was even a little kareoke now and then.
It's not really possible to feel homesick when there's so much to see and do, but I hope everyone at home is well. This trip has far exceeded my expectations, and it only keeps getting better!
